JNBS UWI OPEN
GM Gareev and IM Marko Zivanic lead the JNBS UWI Chess Masters PDF Print E-mail

Grand Master Timur Gareev from Uzbekistan and International Master Marko Zivanic from Serbia lead the JNBS UWI Masters after four rounds of play with three and a half points. GM-elect Giorgi Margvelasvhili of Georgia trails half a point behind. On Monday the games began with local number one FIDE Master Warren Elliott taking on GM Gareev in a swift Benko gambit. The Grandmaster went on to sacrifice the exchange, and finished in resilient style. The other highlight of the first round saw Marcus Joseph, the National Champion of Trinidad and Tobago, toppling Jamaican veteran National Master Geoffrey Byfield in his pet Smith-Morra Gambit line.

International Masters Debut at JNBS UWI Chess Tournament PDF Print E-mail

The UWI Chess Society at UWI, Mona will host the "JNBS UWI Chess Open" on March 15-21, 2010 at UWI, Mona. International Masters Marko Zivanic from the University of Texas and Giorgi Margvelashvili from the University of Maryland will be among the top chess players who will debut at the tournament. Also among the line up are National Masters, Damion Davy and Brandon Wilson from UWI, Mona. This year’s tournament is expected to see over 400 local players from tertiary institutions, high schools and clubs participating in the Chess Tournament.

The Tournament begins with an Opening Ceremony on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 10 am at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona and will be followed by Round 1 of the Masters Section matches at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library.  Chess players at all levels will be facilitated during the tournament which is designed to develop chess at the local level and expand the mental capacity of participants.

Registration fee for Masters is US $100, Men, JA$1550, Women and Juniors pay JA$ 1250 and UWI/ UTech students pay JA $1000.
